One Direction kicks off American Tour

With one 13-track album album to their name, the boys of One Direction relied on a few covers to round out their show while kicking off their North American tour at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut on Tuesday night. It’s likely every ticket buyer, or even the occasional misplaced casino straggler, knows the lyrics to “What Makes You Beautiful” backwards and forwards, so they might as well use the extended set time to deliver something we can’t necessarily find in their book or upcoming DVD.
Up first, an everybody-gets-a-turn mashup featuring “I Gotta Feelin,” “Stereo Hearts,” “Valerie” and “Torn,” which longtime Directioners—or newcomers who’ve benefitted from YouTube’s extensive catalog—should remember was performed during their live X Factor finale. The constant stream of screaming only partially detracts from the listening experience.
After going back to the ’90s with an impromptu performance of his former NBC theme song during his wacky European press tour, Will Smith has indeed started a trend. In between Up All Night tracks, the boys of One Direction co-opted Smith’s song for their live show, emphatically reciting the lines in unison and failing to trip up on the pronunciation of exotic locales in Southeastern Pennsylvania. While they were likely infants during the prime years of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, all five look eager to perform for the crowd, as if they finally reached the episode where Will gets shot outside the ATM and need someone to talk things out with. Ah, the beauty of reruns.
While rapping along to a beloved ’90s television theme song serves as further proof of the band’s vast pop culture knowledge, consider Liam’s ode to Michael Jackson as an additional personality-proving moment. Other important things of note: 1D is very partial to red, white and blue while in the States, sporting some of the same preppy ensembles we saw during their American press tour this spring, and the famous couch from their “One Thing” video made it through customs.
According to the enthusiastic reactions from those in attendance, the boys delivered on their first headlining venture—even if Harry took a tiny tumble. He’s fine, thanks to Louis, but we’ll take his tangled feet as an explanation for why the group stays away from choreography.
